Friends of Oakwood host three tours in August

The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery continues its summer tour program with three more programs in August.

Please register for each walking tour at (518) 328-0090 and pay $15 per tour upon arrival. Children under 12 are free. Participants will assemble near the Earl Chapel at the Oakwood Avenue entrance to the cemetery. Check Facebook for updates if weather is a concern: oakwood cemetery troy ny.

Thursday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. — Full Moon Twilight Tour
Volunteer Heidi Klinowski will lead the group for a look inside the opulent Gardner Earl Chapel, where the western sunlight streams through the vibrant stained glass windows. The walk continues to the graves of some of Oakwood’s interesting “residents,” including Uncle Sam’s, and finally to the panoramic overlook at sunset.

Saturday, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. — Millers, Merchants and Collar Makers — New!
Troy and Rensselaer County Historian Kathy Sheehan will lead a walking tour to the grave sites of some of the workers of Troy’s 19th and early 20th centuries, and talk about their jobs and the contributions they made to our area. The grave of Hannah Lord Montague, often credited with inventing the detachable collar and cuff, is one stop on the tour.

Tuesday Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. — Family Scavenger Hunt
Just $10 per family!
Participants will visit a new area of the cemetery this year working with clues for readers and non-readers. All children must be accompanied by an adult, but each child who completes the hunt will get a prize. Please assemble at the chapel flagpole at the Oakwood Avenue entrance and plan to caravan to the hunt site. If you leave your phone number when you register, you’ll be notified of a rain cancellation.

The Adult Scavenger Hunt will be offered on Friday, Sept. 13!
